Music Will Save Us
Aug 2nd
Music has always been a huge part of my life. At the age of 11 I told my school teacher that someday I will be a famous rock star. Of course, it didn’t exactly happened; I became instead a dance music star in 1994 with Capital Sound! The band did well between 1994 and 1997. Although “I” never was famous, as a band we did win a Juno Award in 1995! So, that’s that. Then, in 2000 my ambient music project called Blue Tonic World was the hot cake download on the famous Mp3.com and brought me a few spotlights and a bit of cash!
But, this post is not about my success story, but instead about how music will save us. More precisely, how it saves us everyday and the way it creeps into our lives just at the right moment.
This post is about myself honoring 5 songs that has had a huge impact in my life…in a very good way, of course :) Songs that when I hear them today brings me back exactly at that precise moment in time when I needed it the most. And they always feel good when I hear them because they help me to remember something wonderful I felt inside, something exciting, profound, inspiring. Something real that I felt and will never forget. Music does that to me. And I’m sure most of you agrees – Everyone has got at least one song that touches them deeply.
Here are 5 songs that means the world to me (Order is of no importance):
1. Avalanche by Matthew Good
Matthew Good - AvalancheEarly 2003 something tragic happened to me. My now ex-wife and I separated then finally the divorced was pronounced a few months later. Tragic, yes it was at first, but in the summer of 2003 I started feeling better. I began feeling lighter, happier and philosophical even. I could breathe again. Then, as I was visiting friends at a cottage, somebody asked if I have heard the new album from Matthew Good. I said no. So, we sat by the lake on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and listened to the album called Avalanche. Then the titled track “Avalanche” came on…the lyrics just hit me in the face. You know, that song that seemed it was written just for you? For me, that song was just it! And musically, I thought it was so incredible. The build up, the emotion and Matt’s voice “…Hey hey hey Avalanche, start inside of me, hey hey hey Avalanche, hell down through the trees…” Powerful. Emotionally connected. Just perfect.
2. Right in the Night by Jam & Spoon
Jam & Spoon - Right In The NightThe first time I have heard that song from the German techno duo of Jam & Spoon it was in the summer of 1994. Pico and I were driving to Toronto for a Capital Sound gig. As usual when we played in T.O we were tuned in to Energy 108 FM, a popular dance radio station. Just there, the host announced “…and now the number one song this week…” It was the greatest euro-dance song I have ever heard in my life, seriously! A wicked, wicked synthesized flamenco guitar riff that just blasted out of the car speakers (and Pico had a pretty good car stereo) and I said to Pico “…this shit is amazing! Just listen to this incredible lick!!!” So, the entire weekend we listened to the radio, hoping to catch “Right in the Night”. The entire band loved it too, not just me! Heck, it was a hot track and it was a hot summer for Capital Sound, which made it even more memorable.
3. Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the SilenceSpring of 1990 something bad happened, not as tragic as the divorce, but sad. My girlfriend dumped me :’( Oh yes I was sad, very very sad. But it wasn’t Depeche Mode’s fault who ruled the charts with “Personal Jesus”; a great song, for sure. But, for me, it was “Enjoy the Silence” that truly captured my heart. I loved the melody, the guitar, and the dance groove, which, you could say, is the first dance music song I fell in love with! While my friends were listening to heavy metal and industrial music, I thought Depeche Mode’s album Violator was just the next level of tones I needed. My quest for producing electronic music began there in 1990 ;)
4. Hysteria by Def Leppard
Def Leppard - HysteriaYeah, okay, Def Leppard were a bit cocky. I admit it. But when you have a producer like Robert John “Mutt” Lange co-writing and producing your shit, you know it’ll be good. And the song “Hysteria” was, to me, a phenomenal track. But, of course, what made the track twice more special was the fact that it was the song that was playing when I first kissed and fell in love with the girl of my life, my first love! I miss being a teenager!
5. When The Smoke Is Going Down by Scorpions
Scorpions - When The Smoke Is Going DownAh yes, 1984, my dad’s country house. I was just a kid back then. My parents had separated a year prior and I was feeling a bit lost and confused. But my dad who had struggled with alcoholism for years was suddenly waking up from his comma that he had no idea struck him. It was an awakening that he badly needed. And as he woke up and began enjoying life again, so was everyone around him who saw the transformation. Separating after 20 years can be hard but what a breath of air fresh it must be when you find the will to live again.
I remember sitting down one evening by the quiet lake; fog gently rising on the water front and another cottage near by playing Scorpions’ “When the Smoke is Going Down”. Tears of joy risen as I watched my dad through the cottage window, looking happy, smiling at me.
Tragedy at Love Parade 2010
Jul 25th
For those of you who might not know, Love Parade is a music festival, better yet, a celebration of electronic music, peaceful gathering, a dance party, that occurs every year in Germany and attracts over a million people.
Yesterday there’s been a tragedy at Love Parade where nineteen souls were lost and five hundred something were hurt because they were ran over and crushed at the tunnel entrance that leads to the outdoor event. It is a very tragic way to die. My heart and prayer goes to all these people and their loved ones.
But, I’m here to talk about an even more tragic event. One that was troubling and evoked rage within myself as it was displayed in my face: Reading comments from people about the Love Parade Tragedy on the Yahoo News site.
I just can’t believe how careless, immature and dumb the comments are. Here’s a few example below:
“They’re only German’s for god sake. It’s not as if somebody important died. Future Nazis. Nuke the whole country.”
“Sausage fest hahaha.”
“what do you expect, it is Germany after all and they like it rough.”
“I thought all good Nazis learned how to march. The Germans and the Japs should all be destroyed.”
And it goes on and on like this. Nazi slurs, homophobic slurs, just some of the meanest comments I have ever read about a tragedy where innocent people died. It’s like, all of the dumbest people gathered last night to comment on a subject. Just pure ignorance. And there are hundreds of comments like the ones above!
What is the Internet becoming? But more importantly, where is all that rage and hatred found on comment sections and blogs come from?

Radio Star Forever!
Jan 10th
Just came across this video and, man o’ man…I was just a little kid when this was released. My sister had the 45 rpm! But what an awesome song!
Now, whats even more amazing is that the original band members reunited in 2004 to play that song again. The result? Simply AWESOME!! Watch it:
Best Songs & Films of the Decade
Jan 1st
OK so before I get started with this I want you to know that the following are only my personal favorite and not the best of the Oscars or MTV Awards. This is purely based on how I feel (and how I felt) when I hear these songs and see these flicks and what they mean to me. And, of course, it is extremely difficult to compress 10 years in a top 10! I also believe that the last 10 years have brought us the best movies ever. I also have discovered some incredible bands and performers. So here we go…
My Top 10 Songs of the Decade:
10- Carbon (Tori Amos)
09- Roll it up (The Crystal Method)
08- Beautiful Burnout (Underworld)
07- Breaking the Habit (Linkin Park)
06- Comfortable Liar (Chevelle)
05- Crush (Paul Van Dyk)
04- All I Need (Radiohead)
03- Falling Slowly (Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova)
02- Yellow (Coldplay)
01- Avalanche (Matthew Good)
My Top 10 Movies of the Decade:
10- District 9
09- King of Kong
08- The Bourne Identity
07- Gladiator
06- Idiocracy
05- Signs
04- Wall-E
03- Zeitgeist Addendum
02- Cast Away
01- Lords of the Ring Trilogy
Obviously, there are so many others that I would need to create a Top 100 and still compress twenty more songs and movies inside a top 10 because that is how much good stuff there is, it’s just crazy! Still, the above songs and movies certainly deserve to be there, for me anyway. So cheers & Happy Holidays!
Worst Songs Of All Time – Revised
Dec 18th
Yes I admit I am very picky when it comes to music. Even though I like many genre of music, I probably despise pop music the most. Why? Simple, every time you turn on the radio or watch music videos on TV what is it you hear the most: The same five freakin’ songs fifteen times a day for three months! So, obviously, for this reason I rarely listen to any radio or music videos. So this brought me to this project…
I realize, it’s much easier to do a top 40 of the worst songs ever than the other way around! Right? I do love a truck load of songs but just for the fun of it I felt like doing this! So here it is….BitBurn’s Worst Songs of all time list!
Now before any of you don’t agree with my chart, I want you to know this:
- This is strictly based on the song, not the artist nor the genre. Let’s face it, everyone knows Celine Dion is an incredible singer but, man, she sings a lot of crappy songs!
- I chose songs that “I” don’t like so it doesn’t mean there all crappy; they’re just irritating to “my” ears, that’s all.
- This is purely for fun. I wasn’t paid to do this!
So here goes…the order doesn’t really matter I hate ‘em all equally ;)
#40- I’d do anything for love (but I won’t do that) by Meatloaf
#39- Walking on sunshine by Katrina and The Waves
#38- Greatest love of all by Whitney Houston
