The BlackBerry is Dead

Pablo Perez-Fernandez, an analyst with MKM Partners in Corte Madera, Calif., said that it’s unfair to compare BlackBerrys to Apples so to speak because the iPhone is “special.” (Read full article here: CNN.com)

Well, mister Perez-Fernandez, I got news for you: It is perfectly fair to compare the new Torch to the iPhone 4 because, you know what, the iPhone is not special at all – It’s more advanced – Therefore better. That is all. I mean come on, RIM Blackberry used to be the king and is definitely still king of the corporate world but, guess what? The corporate world does not dictate what consumers want – Consumers dictate trends and not the other way around.

I saw tons of hands-on and presentation videos off YouTube about the new BB Torch and guess what? It’s crap at best. It’s the same old bullshit and people don’t want that anymore; they want large 3.5″ – 4.0″ screens, full web browsing, social networking features and a 8 megapixel camera.

The Blackberry is dead…well, except for corporate dicks.

Damn you Adobe and Apple

Using an iPhone, iPad or iTouch and running into a web page with Flash content now gives you the following message from our friends at Adobe: “Flash Player not available for your device. Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Adobe Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone, iPad or iPod”. Just try from your iDevice and see for yourself!

But, didn’t Steve Jobs mentioned during his appearance in June on AllThingsD that Adobe did code Flash for iPhone OS a while back but performance was so sucky that Apple said “Come back later when you get your shitty software fixed and we’ll talk business”. Yeah, OK…

So, Adobe Flash sucks, we know that. Apple are being dicks as usual and we know that. So, what now? Cuz, the thing is, there is still lots of content that requires Flash all over the web and tons of people now uses Apple’s mobile devices to browse the web. Will a comprise be reached anytime soon?? Well, I got a few ideas of my own here!

Apple, allow Flash to be installed on the iPhone (at least on the iPad for heaven sake) with a little on/off switch that the user can control. We’re not all completely retarded.

Adobe, put a little effort in creating a good Flash plugin for Apple’s iDevices, would ya; one that doesn’t hog system resources and crash the device too much. Is that too much to ask for?

Et voilà!

Why I Switched To Android

I used to enjoy my iPhone 3G. Heck, I really like the new iPhone 4 too! But now, I have discovered Android OS and I really dig it. Here’s why…

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing the local newsgroups and was wondering for how many people are selling their iPhone 3GS now that the iPhone 4 is out. Looking around, I came across someone that was selling a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Reading the dude’s post, it said “…Xperia X10 for sale or would trade for an iPhone 3GS or even an old 3G plus a bit cash…” I thought to myself what a great opportunity to try out Android! The deal went through and a few hours later I had a beautiful 3 months old Xperia X10 in my hand.

So there, I began learning the device and what Android was all about. What I pleasantly discovered was a very capable operating system and a very speedy phone. That 1ghz SnapDragon CPU and 512 mb of ram counts for something. But what I also discovered was tons of app from the Android Market that are quite awesome. Apps that enhances the phone experience; another one to create ringtones from your own mp3′s and another one replaces the SMS and MMS default app. Basically, tons of apps that you just can’t get on an iPhone because Apple don’t let you modify anything.

So that’s it for me. I am hooked on Android. Finally, some freedom to do everything and anything I want to do which is basically to be able to customize it, tweak it to my liken! Sure you can jailbreak an iPhone but every time Apple releases a software update you’re back to square one and have to wait for the nice people of Cydia to work their magic. Either way, Android is bringing me plenty of lovin’ right now!

As for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, it’s not a bad phone either, only it uses an older version of Android (1.6) but SE promises a software update coming in September that will bring the X10 to version 2.1 of Android. I know Rogers is coming out with the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate very soon so I might get that monster; I read some reviews and watched YouTube videos and that thing it’s up there in terms of quality design of the iPhone 4. But for now, that Xperia X10 keeps me happy plus it didn’t cost me much – just an old iPhone 3G and a fistful of dollars ;)

Music Will Save Us

Music has always been a huge part of my life. At the age of 11 I told my school teacher that someday I will be a famous rock star. Of course, it didn’t exactly happened; I became instead a dance music star in 1994 with Capital Sound! The band did well between 1994 and 1997. Although “I” never was famous, as a band we did win a Juno Award in 1995! So, that’s that. Then, in 2000 my ambient music project called Blue Tonic World was the hot cake download on the famous Mp3.com and brought me a few spotlights and a bit of cash!

But, this post is not about my success story, but instead about how music will save us. More precisely, how it saves us everyday and the way it creeps into our lives just at the right moment.

This post is about myself honoring 5 songs that has had a huge impact in my life…in a very good way, of course :) Songs that when I hear them today brings me back exactly at that precise moment in time when I needed it the most. And they always feel good when I hear them because they help me to remember something wonderful I felt inside, something exciting, profound, inspiring. Something real that I felt and will never forget. Music does that to me. And I’m sure most of you agrees – Everyone has got at least one song that touches them deeply.

Here are 5 songs that means the world to me (Order is of no importance):

1. Avalanche by Matthew Good

Matthew Good - Avalanche

Early 2003 something tragic happened to me. My now ex-wife and I separated then finally the divorced was pronounced a few months later. Tragic, yes it was at first, but in the summer of 2003 I started feeling better. I began feeling lighter, happier and philosophical even. I could breathe again. Then, as I was visiting friends at a cottage, somebody asked if I have heard the new album from Matthew Good. I said no. So, we sat by the lake on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and listened to the album called Avalanche. Then the titled track “Avalanche” came on…the lyrics just hit me in the face. You know, that song that seemed it was written just for you? For me, that song was just it! And musically, I thought it was so incredible. The build up, the emotion and Matt’s voice “…Hey hey hey Avalanche, start inside of me, hey hey hey Avalanche, hell down through the trees…” Powerful. Emotionally connected. Just perfect.

2. Right in the Night by Jam & Spoon

Jam & Spoon - Right In The Night

The first time I have heard that song from the German techno duo of Jam & Spoon it was in the summer of 1994. Pico and I were driving to Toronto for a Capital Sound gig. As usual when we played in T.O we were tuned in to Energy 108 FM, a popular dance radio station. Just there, the host announced “…and now the number one song this week…” It was the greatest euro-dance song I have ever heard in my life, seriously! A wicked, wicked synthesized flamenco guitar riff that just blasted out of the car speakers (and Pico had a pretty good car stereo) and I said to Pico “…this shit is amazing! Just listen to this incredible lick!!!” So, the entire weekend we listened to the radio, hoping to catch “Right in the Night”. The entire band loved it too, not just me! Heck, it was a hot track and it was a hot summer for Capital Sound, which made it even more memorable.

3. Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

Spring of 1990 something bad happened, not as tragic as the divorce, but sad. My girlfriend dumped me :’( Oh yes I was sad, very very sad. But it wasn’t Depeche Mode’s fault who ruled the charts with “Personal Jesus”; a great song, for sure. But, for me, it was “Enjoy the Silence” that truly captured my heart. I loved the melody, the guitar, and the dance groove, which, you could say, is the first dance music song I fell in love with! While my friends were listening to heavy metal and industrial music, I thought Depeche Mode’s album Violator was just the next level of tones I needed. My quest for producing electronic music began there in 1990 ;)

4. Hysteria by Def Leppard

Def Leppard - Hysteria

Yeah, okay, Def Leppard were a bit cocky. I admit it. But when you have a producer like Robert John “Mutt” Lange co-writing and producing your shit, you know it’ll be good. And the song “Hysteria” was, to me, a phenomenal track. But, of course, what made the track twice more special was the fact that it was the song that was playing when I first kissed and fell in love with the girl of my life, my first love! I miss being a teenager!

5. When The Smoke Is Going Down by Scorpions

Scorpions - When The Smoke Is Going Down

Ah yes, 1984, my dad’s country house. I was just a kid back then. My parents had separated a year prior and I was feeling a bit lost and confused. But my dad who had struggled with alcoholism for years was suddenly waking up from his comma that he had no idea struck him. It was an awakening that he badly needed. And as he woke up and began enjoying life again, so was everyone around him who saw the transformation. Separating after 20 years can be hard but what a breath of air fresh it must be when you find the will to live again.

I remember sitting down one evening by the quiet lake; fog gently rising on the water front and another cottage near by playing Scorpions’ “When the Smoke is Going Down”. Tears of joy risen as I watched my dad through the cottage window, looking happy, smiling at me.

Tragedy at Love Parade 2010

For those of you who might not know, Love Parade is a music festival, better yet, a celebration of electronic music, peaceful gathering, a dance party, that occurs every year in Germany and attracts over a million people.

Yesterday there’s been a tragedy at Love Parade where nineteen souls were lost and five hundred something were hurt because they were ran over and crushed at the tunnel entrance that leads to the outdoor event. It is a very tragic way to die. My heart and prayer goes to all these people and their loved ones.

But, I’m here to talk about an even more tragic event. One that was troubling and evoked rage within myself as it was displayed in my face: Reading comments from people about the Love Parade Tragedy on the Yahoo News site.

I just can’t believe how careless, immature and dumb the comments are. Here’s a few example below:

“They’re only German’s for god sake. It’s not as if somebody important died. Future Nazis. Nuke the whole country.”

“Sausage fest hahaha.”

“what do you expect, it is Germany after all and they like it rough.”

“I thought all good Nazis learned how to march. The Germans and the Japs should all be destroyed.”

And it goes on and on like this. Nazi slurs, homophobic slurs, just some of the meanest comments I have ever read about a tragedy where innocent people died. It’s like, all of the dumbest people gathered last night to comment on a subject. Just pure ignorance. And there are hundreds of comments like the ones above!

What is the Internet becoming? But more importantly, where is all that rage and hatred found on comment sections and blogs come from?

Seasons Wonder

I love every Canadian seasons. Cold and hot. But, there’s no doubt about it, summer is the best. I have always lived here in the national capital region where all 4 seasons are quite bold and different from one another. So I have no clue what it must be like living in an area, such as California for example, where it’s always summer weather all year long.

Yes it’s true, it can get a bit boring in November or feel a bit gloomy in January since there’s less light of day. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t trade my Canadian seasons for all the sunlight of Hawaii ;)
